University PD selects new chief

Chancellor Jones announced on Tuesday that Alice Cary will become the new Executive Director of Public Safety and Chief of Police for the University of Illinois Police Department.  She is currently the chief of police for the University of Maryland in Baltimore and will be starting at UIUC July 20, provided she is approved by the Board of Trustees.

Matthew Myrick has been the interim chief of police since January of this year following Craig Stone’s departure.

Cary has been in law enforcement for 34 years, having worked at the University of Oregon PD; the Lane County District Attorney’s Office, also in Oregon; the Wyoming Highway Patrol; and numerous other departments across the country.  Cary also has a master’s degree in criminal justice.

“She established a dedicated Campus Outreach and Support Team that engages with the campus and the greater community to build trust through establishing personal relationships, improving communications, operating transparently and demonstrating a commitment to serving all people,” Jones said in his statement.

“There is no higher priority for us than ensuring that our community is as safe and secure as possible for our students, faculty, staff and visitors to work, live and learn. I’m excited to have Alice Cary lead that effort for us.”
