URBANA — On Sunday, the University of Illinois Police Department announced the death of Officer Tony Carpenter, who passed away while off-duty.
To honor the 58-year old officer, the following day a campus police car was parked right outside of the department building on W Springfield Ave. Black Ribbon was then draped around the car in memoriam.
Carpenter was with UI department for more than 18 years and served on the Champaign Country street crimes task force.
“We mourn the off-duty death of Officer Tony Carpenter,” read a Facebook post from the University of Illinois Police account. “Rarely in our lives do you encounter someone so compassionate and caring, and someone who can brighten your day just with his presence. We were better for having known you. And whether you knew him or not, we have all been positively impacted by Officer Carpenter’s service to our community. Rest easy, 114. We’ll take it from here.”
Details about the cause of Carpenter’s death have not been released.
UI7 Live did reach out to UI Police about how long the police car will be parked outside of the department and it is expected to be outside until the end of the week.
