UI Library Archives COVID Experiences

By Connor Ciecko

Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and the move to remote learning across the state and country, the University of Illinois Archives has been collecting first-person experiences of the crisis.

The project, entitled “What’s Your Story,” encouraged campus community members to share stories, photos, videos and other pieces to document their experiences over the last 10 weeks.  The goal of the project is to collect a historical record of how the University adapted to a transition to online learning and adjusted to life with the stay-at-home order.

Thus far, the library has collected a wide variety of archival content from videos and photos of campus, to more creative records like rap videos and artwork.  Just as old black-and-white photos of campus carry intrigue today, the hope is that this content will hold weight for generations in the future hoping to understand and learn from these experiences. All students and community members are encouraged to submit their experiences, and the portal for contributions is planned to be open through the end of the year.  Stories and photos can be submitted at archives.library.illinois.edu.
