The Office of Civic Life Gives Back to Champaign

The Union is home to a variety of offices but one that is lesser known on campus is the office of Civic Life formerly known as the Volunteer Progams Office. They are dedicated to not only serving the campus community but the greater champaign area as well. The office is dedicated to getting students involved through different pathways.

They want to encourage students to volunteer and think of the world in different ways which is highlighted in their new initiative slogan curiosity, reflect, action, and change. The office wants to show that there are ways to implement service ideas within the community to help families and students during the holiday season.

The Office of Civic Life is a relatively small office which has allowed them to reach out to student organizations like Health of the Homless which were crucial to them being able to have all hands on deck for their meal drive. The partnership has allowed for both organizations to come together for an event that supports both of their values.

Health of the Homeless wanted to be able to encourage not just students but African American students to volunteer in their community especially with a cause that closely impacts many college students: food insecurity. This has been a recurring topic in the Champaign community especially when it pertains to the campus community.

Instituting drives like this help flourish the community which has led the Office of Civic Life to debut their new toy drive in partnership with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. The toy drive will continue until December 6th and all toys will go to Cunningham Children’s Home. They’re accepting all new toys. Donation boxes can be found at the Office of Civiv Live room 285, Ikenberry Commons, and the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center.

Within our community there are so many hidden gems and volunteer opportunities for students and the Champaign community to be a part of.
