Sisters in more ways than one

By Pari Apostolakos

Bid day looked a little bit different this year for the 19 sororities which participate in formal recruitment on the University campus. The celebration of joining a sisterhood, usually complete with active members leading new members in a sprint to their chapter house followed by dinner and a get-to-know-you session went virtual, like so many events have this year.

For one pair of sisters, bid day was special in its own way.

Nicole Economou, senior at the University, and Danielle Economou, a freshman, are now sisters in more ways than one.

Nicole received a bid from Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority in the Fall of 2017. Danielle knew she wanted to follow in her sister’s legacy and ended up joining the same sisterhood just three years later. Nicole decided to surprise her sister with a frozen treat and a visit to her dorm after the virtual celebration. They made a call to their parents at home in Chicago to share the happy news.

Nicole says that just because Danielle’s bid day couldn’t be in person doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be special.
