Possible elimination of duration of status admission

By: Pari Apostolakos

On Friday, September 25th, the Federal Register published proposed changes to duration of status admission for international students and scholars. One student shares how he thinks this would impact the University of Illinois’ international student population.

LAST WEEK INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS RECEIVED AN EMAIL FROM INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AND SCHOLAR SERVICES. THIS EMAIL WAS THE UNIVERSITY’S RESPONSE TO THE PUBLICATION OF A PROPOSED RULE TO ELIMINATE DURATION OF STATUS ADMISSION FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS SCHOLARS AND THEIR DEPENDENTS. THIS RULE COULD IMPACT THE STUDENT POPULATION.

THE FEDERAL REGISTER PUBLISHED THESE PROPOSED CHANGES ON FRIDAY SEPTEMBER TWENTY FIFTH. I SPOKE TO ONE STUDENT WHO IS CONCERNED ABOUT HOW THIS COULD IMPACT HIS POST-GRADUATE DECISIONS.

IN AN EMAIL SENT TO INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS INTERNATIONAL STUDENT AND SCHOLAR SERVICES WROTE – QUOTE – “THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS STRONGLY OPPOSES THIS PROPOSED CHANGE. WE HOPE THAT THIS PROPOSED RULE WILL BE ELIMINATED AND WE WILL BE SUBMITTING A LETTER OUTLINING OUR CONCERNS.” THE EMAIL WENT ON TO AFFIRM UNIVERSITY SUPPORT FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS AND SCHOLARS SAYING – QUOTE – “YOUR EXCEPTIONAL TALENTS, CONTRIBUTIONS AND PERSPECTIVES ARE CRITICAL TO MAKING THE UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS A WORLD-CLASS INSTITUTION.”

ALTRUY XIA – SENIOR AT THE UNIVERSITY – HAILS FROM MAINLAND CHINA. HE BELIEVES THE ELIMINATION OF DURATION OF STATUS ADMISSION IS BEING PROPOSED IN ORDER TO PROTECT AGAINST STUDENTS OVERSTAYING THEIR VISAS. HOWEVER, HE DOES NOT THINK THIS PROBLEM OCCURS OFTEN.

AS A SENIOR XIA IS NOT CONCERNED ABOUT THIS PROPOSED RULE IMPACTING HIS EDUCATION. BUT HE IS SPECULATING ABOUT THE FUTURE.

IF THIS CHANGE DOES OCCUR, XIA IMAGINES STUDENTS FROM OTHER COUNTRIES WILL STILL PURSUE HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE STATES.
