It wasn’t expected. Some would say it was actually a surprise. But Petra Holešínská, one of the pillars of the Illinois Women’s Basketball team, announced she was transferring in late March.
The Illini had started to take steps forward as a program under the guidance of Nancy Fehey as well as around players like Holešínská. But now they are losing the redshirt junior.
Holešínská announced her intent to transfer to the University of North Carolina on April 5th, and just like that the Illini lost their leading scorer.
Holešínská bolsters a UNC team that went just 7-11 in their conference last year, and brings an immediate scoring threat.
For the Illini they are left searching for answers. Holešínská was their leading scorer with 12.6 points per game, the next closest scorer was Kennedi Myles and Ali Andrews, who each averaged 8.6 per game.
After just receiving a new contract extension last week, head coach Nancy Fehey will have some work to do to ensure that the Illini continue taking steps forward, although players like Jenna Peebles showed promise.
Holešínská takes her last year of eligibility to UNC.
