Athletic Director Josh Whitman announced Fahey’s extension on Friday afternoon. It is a two year extension that ensures that the women’s basketball head coach will be in Champaign through the 2024-2025 season.
The extension is sure to stir up controversy, given that Fahey has just 21 wins over her two years with the Fighting Illini. But Josh Whitman has obviously been happy with the way things are going, “Although the wins have not come on the court as quickly as any of us, especially Nancy, would like, I see the internal growth occurring within the program.” Said Whitman, “The culture and work ethic have improved dramatically, as has our talent. Nancy and her staff have worked tirelessly in the gym and on the recruiting trail, and we have a talented, motivated core group of players returning for us next season, complemented by an impressive set of newcomers.” Fahey was hired prior to the 2018-19 season, and the Illini have improved in each of those first two seasons.
Now the next step for the Illini is to continue improving and collecting talent. It will be a tough task given the impending transfer of junior Petra Holešínská, but Fahey still has her eyes on the future, “We know our work is far from done, but we see the winning culture developing every day. The foundation has been set, and I am excited for the future of our program.”
Fahey has won five national titles and is a women’s basketball Hall of Famer.
