On Tuesday, the Illinois wrestling team announced via Twitter that they were withdrawing from this weekend’s Mountaineer Invitational at Appalachian State in Boone, North Carolina due to COVID-19 issues within the Illinois team. This marks the first time since the return of college sports in the fall of 2020 that any Illinois team has needed to cancel a competition because of COVID-19 concerns, according to a release from the Fighting Illini website. This ends a streak of more than 400 consecutive Fighting Illini athletic events without self-imposed COVID-19 disruption.
According to the University of Illinois’s shield testing data, there have been 188 new cases of COVID-19 in the past seven days. The current positivity rate is a 1.05% with a 0.61% rate over 30 days.
The Illinois wrestling team is set to compete next on November 20th at the Lindenwood Open at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Missouri.
