Hi there! I’m Ethan Simmons, a native of Champaign, Illinois, and student at the University of Illinois, on track to graduate in May of 2021.
Journalism found me in 2019, when I joined my campus newspaper The Daily Illini on a whim. Two months later, I switched from business into my school’s journalism program.
I joined The News-Gazette the following summer, covering life in the East Central Illinois community I’d grown up in for the paper that arrived on my doorstep for my entire childhood.
I continued at the DI, becoming news editor for the publication in March. My education as an editor and coach of journalism began as the pandemic hit the United States.
Last summer, I interned at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, writing for the business section. I was lucky enough to get an in-person experience, and I profiled a number of manufacturers and young workers adapting to COVID-19, among other things.
I’m an experienced writer with growing multimedia experience in audio, video and broadcast production, with sharp news judgment and positive demeanor to boot.
