Espresso Royale announces the closure of stores; C-U locations unaffected

Espresso Royale LLC announced Thursday that it was officially shuttering its business following financial troubles due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, the C-U locations will be unaffected.

“Sadly, our company has not survived the coronavirus pandemic,” Espresso Royale LLC said in a statement Thursday.

On March 20, all locations closed temporarily and this week the company officially ceased all operations in Champaign-Urbana as well as in Michigan and Wisconsin.

“We thank our wonderful baristas, cafe managers, bakers and the entire Espresso Royale family for your excellent and tireless work,” Espresso Royale said. “We thank our customers for favoring us with your business and friendship over the years. We thank our vendors, service providers and landlord partners for your consistent support of our business.”

But as one door closes, another one opens.

The C-U locations will remain open through the help of Espresso Royale general manager Douglas McCarver. Along with some other people, McCarver formed Espresso Royale CU, which will be keeping the locations open for business as usual. Other locations still owned by Espresso Royale LLC will close.

Espresso Royale CU also released a clarification on Facebook.

“We’ll serve the same great coffee and beverages as always,” McCarver said in an email.
