Elena Cleary is a freshman studying Agricultural Communications with a focus on Journalism. She is from Beverly, a neighborhood on the South side of Chicago. During her first semester, she joined the teams of Good Morning Illini and Illini Sports Night shows. She created content and operated equipment in the control room. Her stories aired on the Good Morning Illini morning show on Fridays at 11 A.M. Elena also works at Richmond Studio as a Lab Assistant, helping content producing students with cameras and other equipment. She continues to work in the control room and become proficient with all the studio machinery and software.
She also is a content producer for “Her Campus Illinois,” the University’s chapter of “Her Campus” magazine. The website and social media pages profile campus culture, style, pandemic updates, and other items of interest.
Elena loves to travel and hopes to study abroad. She loves journalism because it connects everyone and everything. No matter where you go or who you meet, there will always be a story to tell.
Working for Good Morning Illini is giving Elena the opportunity to get to know the University of Illinois better and meet new people. In her first content producing class, she profiled a small business called “Just Bee Açai”. What started as a simple feature on a local food truck turned into an inspiring story about the owner, whose good friend and customer died from cancer. The owner now donates a sum of her earnings to cancer research charities. This story was Elena’s favorite package, proving that moving stories can be found anywhere, if you ask the right questions. She looks forward to finding more stories to tell and spending some time in front of the camera at Richmond Studio this semester.
