Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, both in Champaign and Urbana, public pools will be opening with some added precautions during the ongoing pandemic.
The Champaign Park District’s Sholem Aquatic Center will be open for various times this summer. Hours range based on activity and reservations may be made up to a week in advance according to their website here.
Hours at Sholem Aquatic Center are:
- Public swim everyday 12:00-7:00 p.m.
- Lap swim weekdays 6:45 a.m. and weekends 8:00-10:45 a.m.
- Tiny tots splash time on weekdays from 7:30-11:45 a.m. and weekends 8:00-10:45 a.m.
Registration for Sholem Aquatic center will have time slots open during the following times daily:
- 12:00-2:00 p.m.
- 2:30-4:30 p.m.
- 5:00-7:00 p.m.
The Champaign public pool will open on Saturday, May 29. According to Champaign Park Districts website, the pool will operate following recommendations from public health officials as well as the Restore Illinois Plan.
In Urbana, the Crystal Lake Park Family Aquatic Center will also begin operations on Saturday, May 29.
Face masks will be required at the facility with the exception of those in water at the facility as well as the request that guests practice social distancing.
According to Urbana Park District’s website here, swimmers also must register in advance for time slots when visiting the aquatic facility. Lap swims will be available for 45 minute sessions with two swimmers in each lane at a maximum capacity; open swims will also follow reservation slots for pre-determined times.
Registration will begin for May and June on May 17, for July on June 14 and for August/September times on July 19. Walk-ins will be allowed so long as the space is available upon arrival to the Urbana public pool.

- Lap swim weekdays 6:00-8:00 a.m. & 11:00-1:00 p.m.
- Open swim weekdays 4:00-7:00 p.m. & weekends 10:00-7:00 p.m.
- Saturday & Sunday time slots will be
- 10:00-1:00 p.m.
- 1:30-4:30 p.m.
- 5:00-7:00 p.m.
