Champaign raises bar age for campus area

By Connor Ciecko

On Thursday, Champaign Mayor Deborah Frank Feinen issued an amendment to Emergency Order 20-24. This amendment raises the entry age for bars in the campus area to 21 all day.

Previously, the emergency order prohibited patrons under 21 at the bars only after 9 pm. Bars that also serve full meals and cook food on site are still allowed to welcome guests under 21 until 9 pm, though the must leave the business “immediately upon the conclusion of their meal.” Food trucks that service the bars do not count as food cooked on site. At this time, it is uncertain what effect this new rule will have on popular student bars.

The amendment goes into effect at 2 am on Friday, September 25. This story is developing and will be updated as new information comes in.
