By Acacia Hernández

La Casa Cultural and the Bruce D. Nesbitt African American Cultural Center will be co-hosting the annual Black and Latina Womxn Summit virtually this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. via Zoom. The event is set to start with keynote speaker Carmen Perez, the executive director of The Gathering for Justice, followed by break out sessions as a way to provide a chance to build coalitions for Black and Latina women.

“Historically, we have been oppressed and subject to systematic, psychological, and emotional distress,” wrote the 2021 BLWS Planning Committee. “Therefore, it is imperative for every Black, Latinx, and Afro-Latinx womxn to understand the power within their voice and existence.”

This year’s theme is “Against All Odds: Rise Up” which was inspired by Andra Day’s song “Rise Up,” according to the registration form.
